This week I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing the person who got me started in sync.
There is a funny story behind this with some amazing gems, so here it goes:
In July of 2022 I already interviewed about 5 people to my upcoming sensational podcast “sync licensing gems” that would completely change the landscape of sync licensing.
So I decided “why not go to someone I’ve been looking upto for years???” (That’s Jesse Joseffson)
It took some thought I’d be honest, and I wasn’t very confident in myself, but I did it. I sent my little message about the podcast which looked something like this:
The same day I got a message from Jesse saying something about audience numbers and stats. The message was very nice, but it was a firm NO
I responded respectfully, but was very disappointed inside. I ran that comment in my mind 1000 times in the month after that. It went something like: “audience numbers????? I’ll show you audience numbers and never invite you on my podcast even when you beg for it!!”. I know… That’s harsh, but that’s my head sometimes.
I was resentful for sure, but after a bit I moved on with life and forgot it. I got to interview some of the greatest minds in production music, I kept paving my way as a composer, making my first 5 figure year in sync, and while doing that having mutual touch points with Jesse. I actually met with a friend of mine which is great friends with Jesse, and as things were connecting for me I also realized that Jesse was a father of 2. So just for perspective- not only does he have a community of thousands of people to manage, Jesse also still writes music and does masterminds, he has his own YouTube channel, he is an amazing and loyal friend to his circle, but on top of that- has 2 kids! I could not imagine how much was and still is on this man’s plate! I felt a huge amount of respect for him when I realized all that.
So cut to 2.5 years later, now not only do I have more to prove for my skills as a composer, I’ve also had over 80 guests on my podcast that have given me their time of day and dropped insane gems on me and my guests. Now not only am I confident in sending a follow up, I also suggest to go on Jesse’s pod.
And guess what.
Here we are :) look at my smile
I took my shot which is a good thing to do, but on top of that I got to experience the experience i’ve experienced so many times in the past decade. No in this industry doesn’t mean “No, fuck off, never”, it just means “not right now”. This is something you will experience with or without AI. The word no is something we hear a lot in this industry. And I kid you not, I have gotten to work with MANY of the labels that rejected me at first.
This is where the concept that me and Jesse coin in the episode comes in: PERSISTENCY
PERSISTENCY= Persistence + consistency
You heard it here for the first time.
Just like in today’s story, I got rejected many times but then found myself collaborating with writers who write for these exact labels. WABAAAM! how’s that for a no?? I got rejected by a label, then I met the owner at PMC, he is sending me a contract in the coming days. WABAAAAAAAAM! How’s that for a no????
Jesse was hustling like crazy until things started connecting for him. After trying to do the traditional touring thing, he was kinda worn off, so he started doing all sorts of side gigs: e-bay sales, photography gigs, shooting people’s online courses (and more). Until things started clicking for him (not only royalty wise, but career wise), when he started his community and it got traction to the point where he could afford to live without a 9-5 hustle. There is so much to learn from Jesse on this episode, and I am extremely grateful for him coming on this podcast. He has taught me so much along my journey, has shaped my thoughts on many topics and remains a beacon of light in an industry with a lot of smoking mirrors (we talk about this in the interview too)

Love this story! Your persistency is super inspiring to me. I know I needed this reminder today that "no" simply means "not right now."
